Community Alert: Resources to Assist People & Pets
01/21/2025

LOS ANGELES, CA, January 20, 2025 – During the past week, LA Animal Services has seen how our community, rescue organizations and other municipal shelters can come together to help animals and the people who love them. We are grateful to be part of this animal-loving commuinty.

LA Fire Evacuation Animal Services Hotline: 213-270-8155

For pets missing or in distress in evacuation zones, please use the LA Fire Evacuation Animal Services Hotline: 213-270-8155. You will be prompted to answer key questions about your pet, their possible locations and needs. A care team of certified Animal Control Officers from LA Animal Services and surrounding municipal jurisdictions will be dispatched to seek animals needing assistance. You will be notified once the care team has visited the property.

Reporting/Inquiring about Missing Pets in Evacuation Zones

In order to keep Angelenos safe, law enforcement is only allowing certified Animal Control/Humane Officers from LA Animal Services into evacuation order zones. LA Animal Services encourages all members of the public to utilize the LA Fire Evacuation Animal Services Hotline at 213-270-8155 for inquiries about their missing pets. Palisades Fire Unified Incident Command is announcing limited re-entry to some evacuation zones for residents only. Curfews remain in effect in these areas and law enforcement will be verifying addresses at checkpoints. Visit the City of Los Angeles’ re-entry information for zones that are allowing re-entry and for guidance about how to stay safe when you return to an area impacted by wildfire. More information on re-entry here.

Providing Assistance to Pets and Families

By end of day, January 19, LA Animal Services has conducted welfare checks for 114 animals in Pacific Palisades. Successes include contact and service to: 26 chickets, 19 koi fish, 12 fish, and 8 cats.

Since the start of the emergency, care teams have successfully reunited 783 pets with their families, to include 225 at the LA Equestrian Center, 234 at Hansen Dam, 36 at the shelters and 288 in the field. At the two large animal evacuation centers, LA Animal Services staff are continuing to care for the 28 animals (14 horses, including a miniature pony, 1 donkey, 7 sheep, 6 goats) at Hanson Dam and 142 animals (118 horses, 4 donkeys, 6 ponies, 3 sheep, 9 goats, 2 pigs) at the LA Equestrian Center. At the Disaster Recovery Center, we have been able to serve 107 households by providing referrals and information about intervention and available resources; and have signed 67 households up to participate in the Pet Food Pantry for 79 dogs, 30 cats, and 2 birds.

As search and recovery efforts continue in Pacific Palisades, many local agencies, including Riverside County Animal Services, the City and County of San Bernardino Animal Services, and Mission Viejo Animal Services, have responded to provide field assistance to the calls we are receiving. We are also grateful for the support of ASPCA, Annenberg Pet Space, Best Friends Animal Society, and Petco Love for helping us find loving homes for the animals in our shelters to ensure there is lifesaving space for the animals displaced by the fire who will make their way into our care.

Access into Mandatory Evacuation Zones

For safety reasons, law enforcement regulates where and when authorized personnel, including Animal Control Officers, may enter these mandatory evacuation zones. Check points are staffed by members of the LAPD, Sheriff, and National Guard.

Reuniting Lost Pets with Families

The City and County of Los Angeles Animal Shelters are partnering with Petco Love Lost, a free national lost-and-found pet database, to help reunite pets with their families. By uploading a photo of your lost or found pet to Petco Love Lost, you can increase the chances of a successful reunion. The platform uses photo-matching technology to help reunite lost pets with their pet parents. The community may also view LA Animal Services’ Lost Pet Search page.
